In early 2019, NGS will replace GEOID12B with GEOID18, a new hybrid geoid model to deliver improved GPS-derived NAVD 88 equivalent heights. This new model will serve as the official means for obtaining NAVD 88 equivalent heights via GPS. It will be the last hybrid geoid model that NGS will create before NAVD 88 is replaced by NAPGD2022 in 2022. NGS will build this national scale model using the data we have. GPS on Bench Mark (GPS on BM) data can be submitted to NGS via OPUS-Share by local partners to improve the model at the local scale.

NGS encourages anyone with survey-grade Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers to help perform GPS on Bench Marks for National Surveyors Week (March 18–24, 2018) to improve the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS) and raise awareness about professional surveying. This webinar will specifically discuss recommendations to help improve GEOID18 and the transformation tools that will be developed with the new datums in 2022.
