NGS Assists CNMI's Division of Historic Preservation

Friday August 9, 2019

NGS assisted the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands’ (CNMI) Division of Historic Preservation in verifying the location of Japanese structures reported on the East Island of Maug during World War II. These structures include a weather station, barracks, concrete cisterns, and village near the center of that island, as well as a fish factory and concrete pier on the northern tip of the island. The Historic Preservation Office had historical documentation of the structures’ existence, but could not confirm whether any of them were still present, or their current state of preservation. NGS personnel were able to identify the existence of the man-made dock at the north end of East Island.
