NGS Chief Geodesist Inteviewed on Federal News Radio May 21

National Geodetic Survey (NGS) Chief Geodesist, Dr. Dru Smith, was interviewed on Federal News Radio 1500AM on Friday, May 21, 2010 following a press release that announced the conclusion of an NGS-hosted Federal Geospatial Summit. The Summit, held May 11 and 12, 2010 in Silver Spring, Maryland, marked the beginning of a transparent dialogue between NGS and civilian Federal mapping agencies, as well as state and municipal governments that have adopted the National Spatial Reference System--the national coordinate system that specifies latitude, longitude, height, scale, gravity, and orientation throughout the Nation, as well as how these values change over time. Mandated to provide geodetic control to all Federal non-military mapping agencies, NGS is initiating a modernization effort that takes into account advances in Global Positioning System (GPS) and other technologies to update the North American Datum of 1983 and the North American Vertical Datum of 1988. The modernized reference system will allow users to easily calculate accurate positions using a survey-grade GPS receiver in conjunction with a scientific model of the Earth's gravity field.
