NGS Collaborates with USGS in Hurricane Irene Damage Assessment Surveys (NGS)

NGS, working with NOAA's Office of Marine and Aviation Operations, collaborated with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in collecting Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) data over the Outer Banks, North Carolina for Hurricane Irene damage assessment surveys. NGS collected airborne LIDAR data flown on the NOAA King Air aircraft, from Emerald Isle to Oregon Inlet. These data will be provided to USGS to meet their research and response needs. In return, USGS sent ground crews into the field with GPS base stations to set up appropriate control points in the vicinity of the survey, as NGS' Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS) were not sited in locations suitable for the survey.
