NGS Showcases Non-traditional Applications of LiDAR Technology at 2010 NOAA Heritage Week and on Fox 5 News

On Friday, February 5, NOAA's National Geodetic Survey (NGS) showcased its terrestrial Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) scanner at the NOAA Science Center during the sneak preview of the 2010 NOAA Heritage Week. NGS performed several scans of the display hall and produced virtual fly-throughs of the exhibit space for display during the event. Also highlighted was a discussion of NGS' research, including how the technology can be used to obtain high precision, repeatable observations of coastal land elevation and long-term elevation change within coastal ecosystems. NGS' research also aims to develop coastal habitat-specific algorithms to improve the accuracy of traditional aerial LiDAR remote sensing surveys along our Nation's coastlines. The NGS demonstration was covered by local FOX 5 News reporter Holly Morris.
