NGS Plays Active Role at International GNSS Service Workshop

NOAA's National Geodetic Survey (NGS) played an active role at the International GNSS Service (IGS) 2010 Workshop in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, from June 28 to July 2. The last day of the workshop featured a symposium dedicated to the measurement of vertical motion using the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), and NGS is presented in a plenary session titled "Latency, Quality, and Use of Core IGS Products." The IGS is a voluntary federation of more than 200 organizations worldwide that pool resources and continuous satellite-tracking data to generate precise products. As Analysis Center Coordinator for the IGS, NGS coordinates the work of other IGS analysis centers in developing high-precision GNSS satellite orbit determination. These orbit determinations are an essential requirement for allowing Global Positioning System users access to the NOAA-managed National Spatial Reference System and for obtaining positions at the centimeter level or better.
