NOAA Assists Pohnpei with Height Modernization Survey and Training

Beginning in May, and continuing through July 7, 2012, the National Geodetic Survey's (NGS) Pacific region geodetic advisor is in Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia, to assist the region with creating a height modernization survey. The survey will provide the area with a new vertical reference system, and NGS will also train the islanders to perform leveling surveys, similar to the work NGS has performed in partnership with other Pacific islands. NGS is an international leader in geospatial activities, and this project supports NOAA's efforts to improve floodplain mapping, storm surge modeling, and evacuation route planning in key areas in the Pacific. NGS is partnering with NOAA's Pacific Services Center, Coastal Storms Program, and the National Weather Service for this project. It has been nearly 40 years since geodetic control was established in Pohnpei by the U.S. Geological Survey. For more information, contact Ed Carlson.
