NGS Discusses Gravity Mission in Public Webinar

Friday, April 3, 2020

NGS Geodesist Derek van Westrum conducted a public webinar explaining the role of the NGS Gravity Program and how it improves GPS and mapping applications for people in the United States. The webinar requires no prior knowledge and is available online. Topics covered include the geopotential model of the Earth, how it relates to gravity, and how NGS collects gravity data. The 410 participants learned about relative versus absolute gravity, terrestrial versus airborne gravity, gravity versus gravity gradient, and more. This webinar is part of the monthly NGS Webinar Series started in 2015 to educate constituents about NGS activities and provide opportunities for NGS to gather feedback from its customers. Anyone interested in the series can subscribe to receive emails on upcoming webinars.
