NGS Participates in White House Interagency Working Group

Friday, March 6, 2020

NGS Chief Geodesist Dan Roman, PhD, represented the Department of Commerce and NOAA in an Interagency Working Group (IWG) organized by the National Science and Technology Council. This IWG was created in response to Executive Order 13905; it focuses on improving the resilience of position, navigation, and timing services. NGS maintains the Continuously Operating Reference Station Network, which relies inherently on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) services. Any disruption or manipulation of GNSS has the potential to adversely affect the national and economic security of the United States. The IWG will coordinate a national plan and leverage ongoing initiatives to research, develop, and test positioning, navigation, and timing services that are independent of the GNSS.
