NOAA, Canadians Coordinate NSRS Modernization

Friday July 17, 2020

NGS's chief geodesist and its geodetic services division chief attended the virtual annual meeting of the Canadian Geodetic Reference System Committee. Natural Resources Canada and the Canadian Geodetic Survey (CGS) provided updates from their perspectives on the modernization plans for the U.S. National Spatial Reference System (NSRS), the U.S. geographic coordinate system. A presentation was made on outreach and communication efforts inside NGS in support of NSRS modernization efforts. CGS indicated they may adopt some aspects of the U.S. NSRS modernization program. Such coordination and collaboration would enable better cooperation and coordination between the two nations on commercial, engineering, transportation, and scientific efforts.
