NGS, Local Groups Work to Update Heights in Texas

Friday November 20, 2020

NGS announced plans to suppress published heights for datasheets in southeast Texas, including the Galveston, Beaumont, and Houston areas, starting in January 2021. The suppressed heights will be listed in the superseded section of the datasheets. Until new surveys are completed, only 28 out of 7,500 marks in the region will have heights considered valid. NGS suspects the rest of the marks in this area have been affected by regional subsidence - the gradual caving in or sinking of an area of land - and may be inaccurate. NGS is encouraging local partners to perform GPS surveys on marks in their area and submit data through the NGS Online Positioning User Service (OPUS) Projects. To support these efforts, NGS is providing an array of materials, online data and tools, and virtual training. NGS will also coordinate with local partners and provide OPUS Projects training workshops.
