Preparing the Surveying Community for Important Changes Coming in 2022

Since 1959, the United States has used two types of feet, the "international foot" and the "U.S. survey foot." The two units of measurement differ by only 0.01 foot per mile, but having both in use often creates problems with real costs. The result has been decades of confusion in surveying and mapping, where computing accurate coordinates over large distances is commonly required. Modernizing the National Spatial Reference system in 2022 represents an opportunity to eliminate this confusion. An NGS webinar shows how it can help move the United States to a single foot definition in 2022. NGS also developed a short video on this topic with the COMET® program.
