Geodetic Astronomy at NGS: Past and Present

March 10, 2022  |  2:00-3:00 pm, ET

Presenters: Ryan Hardy, Geodesist, Geosciences Research Division, NGS

Astronomy has played a central role in geodesy, whether through measuring Earth’s shape or precisely orienting geodetic networks. This webinar introduces the basic concepts of geodetic astronomy. It overviews the methods and practices of the Coast & Geodetic Survey throughout the 19th and 20th century and the role geodetic astronomy played in the development of modern geodetic systems. It closes with the story of modern geodetic astronomy at NGS with the Geoid Slope Validation Surveys and the development of the Total Station Astrogeodetic Control System (TSACS).
